Walking Through the Garden of Evil

Thanks for stopping by to see what is going on in another day of my life. Today is Tuesday and hurricanes are a brewing.

We now have our first hurricanes in the Atlantic. This one is called Bill and is expected to become a Class 3 hurricane but luckily not come near the coast of Florida. They are hoping it will stay out in the ocean. It looks like the closet point will be near Washington DC and NYC by hopefully still far enough out not to do any damage.

Pensacola, where my Dad lives, was hit by a small tropical storm. Luckily the winds were only around 40 mph and while there was a lot of rain, they did not have any major flooding. I know everyone is breathing a sigh of relief especially after the horrible damage from their last major hurricane.

I have been busy on conference calls and meetings about Ryan White funding which still has not been extended. So we still have a sunset date in about 6 weeks on Sept. 26, 2009. I started calling long time survivors, friends and activists about doing a 21st century version of a DIE-IN that we did in the 80s with ACT Up. The plan is to have each time zone call at 9:11am on 9/11 and speak with Secretary of Health Sebelius and their elected officials about extending Ryan White funding. That way we have calls coming in for four hours in the White House switchboard and hopefully that will catch their attention.

I started talking to organizations about it today and getting their buy-in. Several ASOs have already signed on and a couple of mid and large size organizations. It is my hope we can get a minimum of 50,000 calls over a four hour period and help convince them to extend our funding. Too many people would die needless and horrible deaths without access to the life saving anti-HIV medications. It is bad enough we have ADAP waiting lists in our country. No American citizen should be going without medications when we send the amount of money and medicine to other countries to help their AIDS epidemic. I am not saying other countries do not need help. I have visited and seen how bad it can be. I am just saying, we should be taking care of our own citizens first.

I am doing my workouts trying to keep the bod in shape for all the personal appearances Dab the AIDS Bear and I have coming up in the next few months. Not to bad for almost 50 if I do say myself. I would like to put on another 5 or 10 pounds of muscle and get back close to 190. That is when I think I look my best. And I like to inspire other people when I share I have lived with HIV and AIDS for 28 years. So hopefully they will get they can live with it also.

Plus after all. Hey, I am a gay man and an ex-model. So I have vanity issues. I'm human. Sue me. Wait, no don't.

Those are my thoughts. How about yours? Drop me a line and let me know. Until we meet again; here is wishing you health, hope and happiness.

big bear hug,

Daddy Dab
