Dab the AIDS Bear Calls on Milton Hershey School
to Reverse Denial of Admission on Basis of HIV Status

Welcome to another day in my life. Today is Saturday and I hope your weekend is off to a safe and great start. It is another busy weekend for Dab the AIDS Bear and me.

The bear and I were angered to hear a student was denied admission to a school because of their HIV status. It brings back bad memories from what happened to kids with HIV in the 80s like Ryan White and the Ray brothers.

The bear and I calls on the Milton Hershey School to reverse its decision to deny admission to a 13 year old straight A student solely because he is HIV positive.

Reaction has been immediate and angry.

The school argues that this case is completely different from Ryan White's, because Milton Hershey is a full time boarding school, not a day school. Dab the AIDS Bear Project urges the Milton Hershey School to rethink that - urgently, and not just for the sake of the young man denied admission.

HIV is not spread by casual schoolyard contact. If the school is concerned about the possibility of more intimate contact, it should do what every school should do: educate its students about the risks of unprotected sex and the reasons they have to protect themselves. Both parties involved in a sexual encounter are responsible for their behavior.

Hopefully all of you will feel the same way. It is long past time this type of ignorance, discrimination and stigma should happen to people living with HIV and AIDS.

Hope you have a great Saturday!

Until we meet again; here's wishing you health, hope, happiness and just enough.

big bear hug,

Daddy Dab
