Don't Let a Virus Kill Your Dreams

Welcome to another day in my life. Today is Wednesday and I hope your week is off to a safe and great start.

Luckily here in south Florida we are having what I consider to be ideal weather with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s. Now I understand why older people retire to south Florida. While the cost of living may be higher than north Florida, the climate is perfect if you hate the cold like I do. See I have chronic neuropathy from the early HIV medications and almost three decades of having HIV. But I have never let HIV or the cold stand in my way of enjoying life.

Which brings me to the topic for today which is not letting HIV destroy your dreams. Yes I know there is still stigma against people with the virus. But at least it is not the level of stigma when we did not have life saving medications like back in the 80s and early 90s. Thinking about this topic today reminded me of a poem I wrote many years ago:

On the State Capitol he spoke
Giving birth to a direction
How to win a war
Against an infection
This was the virus of hate
A disease from Hell’s gate

On that day he said:
“Free At Last”
“Free At Last”
Now that day has passed

At Last, You are free
But will this new infection
Change your direction?
Modern medicine has no perfection
This disease is HIV
When you are ready
Use protection
Let this be a caution
Like a car’s head beams
Don’t allow HIV to kill your dreams

While you must take your medications, see the doctor regularly, have blood work done; what you do with the rest of your life is up to you. Just remember to never give up on your dreams. I didn't.

Until we meet again; here's wishing you health, hope and happiness.
