July 13, 2008
Welcome to my Sunday! I hope you are having a great weekend! All things considered it has been a good weekend for me. We had great weather today which was a great change from the constant rain all day yesterday.

It was a rough night between Gary's tossing, turning and snoring. (Now I understand why some couples have seperate bedrooms. So the non-snoring partner can actually get a good night's sleep!) When you add my pain problems to Gary's sleeping pattern, it made for a very long night. I ended up not getting to sleep soundly until around 4:30am and sleeping until 11am. After I got up and made my morning protein shake, Gary and I talked about what we wanted to do for the day. Gary has already been up for a few hours and working around the house. Gary is very concerned about my current health and did not want me to push myself. But I let him know if would help to get out of the house for awhile and see some friends. It seems most of my trips out of the house lately have been to a doctor's office or for medical tests.

We decided on going over to Patrick's house since he was having a big yard sale to help liquidate some of the stuff out of the house since Dale died. I have to admit Dale had the house stuffed full of things like an old woman so it definitely has helped getting rid of a few things. Now you are able to walk around without running into things. It was also great seeing Victor, Richard and Patrick. Several other friends also stopped by while we were there to pay their respects and see what memory of Dale's they might want to get. It was very sad and disconcerting without Dale in the house. I was constantly expecting him to come around the corner and say something. Patrick has already sold most of the birds and fish. Dale had a huge collection that made for a huge maintenance bill. We all ended up having a delicious dinner that Victor prepared of spicy chicken or beef burritos with refried beans. Victor really did a great job with the meal and had enough food to feed ten people. Victor used to own a restaurant and is a great cook. It was great spending some time with the guys and we will be going back over there for Dale's memorial service next Sunday.

After eating dinner, what energy I had quickly left my body and I was ready to get back to the house and our four legged children. So Patrick gave Gary and I a ride home. We decided to make some homemade chocolate pudding and whipped cream for dessert. Then we decided to watch the Miss Universe Pageant on television. The mother of one of my best friends in high school owned a regional pageant so I have been around the pageant world since I was a teenager. So I get a kick out of watching the pageants since I know what the women are really like off the stage. Miss Venezuela was crowned Miss Universe 2008 on Monday in a contest marked by the spectacle of Miss USA falling down during the evening gown competition for the second year in a row. The new Miss Universe, Dayana Mendoza, was once kidnapped in her homeland and says the experience taught her to remain poised under pressure. Tension got under the skin of Miss USA, Crystle Stewart of Texas, who tripped on the train of her bejeweled evening gown as she made her entrance. During the 2007 Miss Universe contest in Mexico City, Miss USA Rachel Smith also tumbled during the evening gown competition and became an unintended star on YouTube, where the video was shown over and over again. At a news conference after this year's event, a beaming Mendoza said she wasn't yet sure where her upcoming year of whirlwind appearances would take her. But after a quick stop in New York, she wants to see her family again, enjoy some of her mom's home cooking and give everyone hugs. Mendoza, 22, is a 5-foot, 10-inch (178-centimeter), green-eyed beauty who enjoys learning languages and photography. She appeared at the news conference in the flowing yellow dress and dangling turquoise earrings that she wore during the evening gown competition in which Stewart took her spill. Stewart, 26, is a motivational speaker and former track and field star who is working on a book called "Waiting to Win." The Houston native plans to open a character-development school for young children and has worked with students with autism in the Texas schools. The final five contestants included four from Latin America: Miss Mexico, Miss Dominican Republic, Miss Colombia and Miss Venezuela. Rounding out the final five was Miss Russia. Miss Colombia finished second behind Mendoza. Miss Thailand won the prize for best national costume and Miss El Salvador was chosen by her peers as Miss Congeniality. The NBC show was hosted by talk show star Jerry Springer and Spice Girl Melanie Brown and broadcast live to hundreds of millions of viewers in 170 countries. The tuxedoed Springer made a grand entrance on a motorbike -- the vehicle of choice in Vietnam, where the streets are teeming with millions of the speeding two-wheelers. Eighty contestants gathered in the seaside city of Nha Trang, Vietnam, vying to succeed previous Miss Universe Riyo Mori of Japan. So if you watched what did you think about the pageant? I know a lot of my female friends are against pageants because they feel the pageants are demeaning to women. I guess there are arguments for both sides like most issues. It just depends what side of the fence your thoughts and values follow.

Tomorrow is supposed to be another horrible weather day. We are expecting constant downpours after around noon time. I find it hard to believe what the news said tonight. According to our local stations, we are still below are normal yearly rainfall which I find hard to believe. I would think just from the storms we have had in the past month that we would at least be up to normal levels. At least all the rain has helped keep our water bill down since we haven't had to water all the plants in our courtyard.

Well that's about all for today folks. Time to get ready for bed and the start of another work week. I hope you had a great weekend and treated yourself to a special memory. Remember to shoot for the stars this next week. What you make out of your life is up to you.

Wishing you health, hope and happiness.

Big bear hug,

Daddy Dab
