Senate Approves Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Amendment (63-28)
Welcome to another day in my life. Today is Friday and trust me, it is TGIF around here as I am busily preparing for my trip to DC and getting caught up around here.
After my morning protein shake, I had a great massage with Vicki which really helped my lower back. It was great talking with Vicki as always during the massage. Then I had a few errands to run like getting some protein bars, picking up a few groceries and my dry cleaning then getting Gary from work.
But all in all life is going good. My back is still healing but feeling better. And I heard some great news today...
Equality Florida applauds the U.S. Senate's approval, late yesterday, of an LGBT inclusive hate crimes amendment, as part of the Department of Defense Authorization bill. When signed into law, this measure will create the first federal protections for LGBT Americans by adding sexual orientation, gender identity, gender and disability to existing federal hate crimes law.
Florida's Senator Bill Nelson was a co-sponsor of the legislation, while Senator Martinez did not vote on the addition of LGBT people to existing hate crimes protections.
Hate crimes legislation cleared the House in April with a vote of 249 to 175. At the time, nearly 3,000 EQFL supporters contacted their US Representatives and we delivered our state (13-12).
After the Senate finishes debate on and passes the Department of Defense Authorization bill, the legislation will likely move to conference committee where differences will be ironed out.
President Obama has stated that he fully supports expanding hate crimes protections for LGBT Americans.
So you can understand why I am in an up mood today with the great news.
Hope you have a safe and great weekend.
big bear hug,
