Welcome to another day in my life. Today is Tuesday and I hope you are having a safe and great start to your week. After another busy weekend, Dab the AIDS Bear and I are enjoying a couple of down days before our next adventure.
This past weekend, Dab the AIDS Bear was at Cherry Grove on Fire Island, New York. Fire Island brings back so many memories from the 80s for me. Back then, I was dating a lawyer who had a place on the Grove. He used to fly me into NYC and then we'd take off for the island for a long weekend and occasionally a whole week.
But that was before the epidemic got so bad. Before there would be thousands of gay men gathering on the island for most of the holiday weekends. Parties ran from the time you got there until it was time to leave. There was a boardwalk that ran from the Groves to the Pines.
The following is a slide show from the pics taken during the weekend:
While it is great remembering the old times, it only brings back some sad memories. Almost all of the guys I knew back then have been dead for complications due to AIDS from a long time. It reminds me of the ending of Longtime Companion when all the friends meet up again one the beach after the last of us are gone.
While Longtime Companions luckily no longer represents what living with HIV and AIDS now, it was very much the reality in the 80s and early 90s. I was lucky enough to get cast as an extra in the movie. It was almost eerie seeing the old spot where the filming took place. I closed my eyes and imagined all my friends being there with me.
Going to go take a walk with the dogs and lift my spirits. All this talk of the past tends to make me sad. I have too stay in the present to help those fighting for the right to have life saving medications.
Until we meet again; here's wishing you health, hope, happiness and just enough.
big bear hug,
