Walk for Life 2012

Welcome to another day in my life. Today is Wednesday and we have almost made it through the middle of another work week. I hope you have been having a safe and great week so far. It has been another busy week for Dab the AIDS Bear and me.

This past weekend, Dab the AIDS Bear was at three AIDS Walks in two countries. One of these walks was the London Walk for Life. If you have never heard about the Walk for Life, I will be blogging about the event today.

Walk for Life is an annual 10K sponsored walk through central London to raise vital funds to support people living with HIV in severe financial need. If you havenít noticed already, weíve decided to have a right royal knees up and go all regal with our fancy dress theme for this year. We can't wait to be kings and queens for the day, and we hope that you will join us in taking up the crown!

Walk for Life is always an amazing fun-filled community event. A chance to join together, be loud and proud about supporting people living with HIV and have a LOT of fun.

Itís also a fantastic excuse to get all dressed up, especially with our Kings and Queens theme - itís reason enough to turn a few frogs into handsome princes! The walk itself gives you chance to take in some of Londonís most iconic and regal sites, and the post walk entertainment is set to be a party fit for a King this year.

But itís so much more than that, most importantly Walk For Life raises money for a vital service which offers a lifeline to people living with HIV in poverty. The Hardship Fund offers invaluable support to some of the most vulnerable people with HIV, allowing them to afford basic necessities like warm clothing, healthy food and the fare to get to the hospital Ė helping them to keep their dignity and stay healthy despite severe financial difficulties.

The more money you raise, the more people we can through the Hardship Fund. Itís as simple as that. So please give your voice and feet for one day this summer, and join us for Walk for Life.

History

Walk For Life was founded in 1989 by HIV and AIDS charity Crusaid. Since then, the Walk has raised millions of pounds to support essential services for people living with HIV.

When Terrence Higgins Trust merged with Crusaid in June 2010 we committed to protect the legacy of itís Hardship Fund and continue to support people living with HIV in poverty. Walk For Life, now in itís 23rd year, continues to be a highlight of Terrence Higgins Trustís fundraising calendar and raises money exclusively for the Hardship Fund. The Walk has always been an incredibly important event for the HIV community, a chance not only to raise vital sponsorship but also to raise awareness and act as a public platform, giving people a voice to grow and shape the nationís response to the virus and remember loved ones. We're incredibly proud to organise such a historic event.

Last yearís journey down the yellow brick road with our Wizard of Oz fancy dress theme was so much fun that we just couldnít resist getting our thinking crowns on to pick another for 2012. With a little help from a walker vote, we came up with the very majestic Kings and Queens. So weíll be having a right royal knees up this year!

You can dress up as much or as little as you want, and if royalty isnít your thing - be creative! Weíre extra excited about this theme because as well as the expected crowns and gowns there is so much space for a bit of fun - think Queen of Hearts, Kings and Queens of pop, Freddie Mercury in THAT drag outfit, Cleopatra, Priscilla or all things King sized! Plain clothes royals are of course welcome too.

Collect your virtual Royal Regalia

Our Kings and Queens theme is more than just dressing up, from the moment you set up your online sponsorship page youíll embark on a noble quest to collect royal accessories. As your sponsorship hits each majestic target you will be rewarded with a growing collection of virtual rosettes on your fundraising page, from the Court Jesterís hat to the ultimate Crown Jewels. Share these with your sponsors to encourage them to help you rise to the next level. And if they donítÖ then off with their heads!

What will be in your treasure chest?

Jesterís Hat (£50) Ė You can secure your hat with just a bit of clowning around
Queenís Corgi (£100) Ė Thereíll be no dog house for you if you get the Corgi
Royal Sceptre (£250) Ė Will you be beating off the suitors with your Royal Sceptre? (donít forget, if you reach this level youíll get a FREE Walk for Life t-shirt!)
Crown Jewels (£500) Ė But will you seal the deal with the ultimate prize?

The event was a ton of fun and we would like to thank everyone in London for showing Dab the AIDS Bear so much love and hospitality. I will be posting the pictures in a few days!

Hope you have a great hump day!

Until we meet again; here's wishing you health, hope, happiness and just enough.

big bear hug,

Daddy Dab
