Welcome to another day in my life. Today is Monday and it is also national Coming Out Day! I hope you had a safe and great weekend.
Dab the AIDS Bear was very busy the past few days. First there was the Pensacola Pride event and then across the Atlantic the bear was at Paris Pride. So stay tuned for slide shows featuring the pictures from both events.
But today I would like to focus on National Coming Out Day. With all the recent gay teen suicides, National Coming Out Day seems more important than ever. Because I have lived in large cities where sexual orientation is not as much of an issue I sometimes forget what it was like to live in a small town where I did not know there were others like me.
High school was very hard for me. It got even worse after some of my class mates saw a picture of me with my boyfriend at pride in San Francisco. Then the cat was out of the bag and they made my life a living hell. I remember so many nights where I even considered suicide so I understand what these six young men have been through with bullying.
I recently saw another one of the videos on YouTube for "It Gets Better" and it was done by Kathy Griffin which you can see below:
So if you are a GLBT teen and you are been bullied, please contact the Trevor Project at 1-866-4U-Trevor. They also have a website at http://thetrevorproject.org where you can find others like you to help.
Just remember it does get better after high school (or college) and I want you to be around to see it. I know it made the world of difference to me when I moved to San Francisco and was surrounded by others like myself.
Until we meet again; here's wishing you health, hope, happiness and just enough.
